VALERO @ 100% Health & Welfare Update From the President
|
Health & Welfare Update
Health-Net users in Napa are still experiencing problems and there
is no easy or quick solution. The Trust office is exploring other options
and we will address these at the December Trust meeting. We are considering
several other plans as well as a "self funded" indemnity plan. Input from
the membership is needed to give some direction to the trustees as to what
is needed by the participants. Either a special called meeting to explore
this issue or at the regular meeting in January we will discuss what improvements
are available and funding required.

From the President
At this time I would like to thank the Brothers and Sisters that strive
to make 2000 such a successful year for Local 180. To name the individuals
would be quite lengthy, so please except my heartfelt thanks!
Many positive additions have been accomplished:
INCREASE IN BENEFITS TO OUR RETIREES.
INCREASE IN BENEFITS FOR PAST AND FUTURE SERVICE YEARS
401-K PLAN THAT HAS LONG BEEN REQUESTED
WE HAVE SEEN OUR MEMBERSHIP GROW FROM 480 TO 600 IN ABOUT 9 MONTHS
Along with the growth comes some pains. Training is an issue of major importance. We have such a large apprenticeship program and influx of newly organized hands, that our level of expertise across the board has suffered It forces us as GF's, Foreman and Journeyman to rethink our layout process in the field. More Attention to instruction and detail may be required.
It is our responsibility to man the work with qualified people. I can't stress enough the importance of extending the hand of knowledge that we possess to better these individuals. Please go out of your way to help educate our members. I also ask that GF's, Foreman and Journeyman contact this office if individuals reject our offer of education and training. Article XIX Sec.2 states:
If, after being admitted to membership, it is later found upon investigation that a member is not sufficiently acquainted with the branch or type of work on which he is engaged to earn or command the established wages, the L.U. can, through its E Board or Exam Board or an especially appointed committee, require such a member to revert to the proper apprentice grade and pay rate, to attend electrical study classes or devote time toward becoming a competent, properly informed electrical mechanic or employee.
This has been used in the past and will continue. Our existence requires qualified people, and we will do what is necessary to accomplish this .
Dan Broadwater
President Local 180
From the Organizer
Over 100 years ago our founding fathers formed the Brotherhood by ORGANIZING.
100 years later organizing continues to be the primary focus of the Brotherhood
and this Local. We have worked diligently to glean the best of the open
shop workers. This has been no easy task and we have a long way to go until
we re-gain dominance in our market. As we continue to struggle to fill
calls it is imperative that we stay focused on ORGANIZING. It is not an
easy job and every member must support and take an active role in this
endeavor to ensure our survival.
Rich Mattson, Organizer
Job Faire
On November 29,2000 the LMCC sponsored a Job Faire at the Training
Facility that was well attended by Local 180 staff. We had several Local
Contractors on hand to answer questions from attendees. There were 45 applications
taken and we expect to have these processed within the next few weeks.
The topic of discussion by almost all of the non-union hands was the fact
that the state test for licensing was upcoming. We advertised in Vacaville,
Vallejo, Fairfield and Napa papers.
