Business Manager's Report

I would like to touch on several additions to our Collective Bargaining Agreement. The International has made Drug Testing, the Code of Excellence and the Repeated Discharge Rule Category 1 Language. The insertion into our CBA is mandatory.

Let’s start with the Drug policy. Implementation does not happen overnight. We will work with our management partners to choose a firm and a fair policy that will satisfy the Internationals requirements along with our clients. Although a drop dead date has not been established, look for the Drug Testing to start immediately after the first of 2008.

The Code of Excellence has been utilized on projects in our jurisdiction. There have been mixed opinions on the value of this program by both Labor and Management. This is going to change for the better. There was never a complete buy-in from management on the Code of Excellence, and this will too change. Our customers such as the Valero’s and the Genentech’s will soon be demanding this program from the other crafts as well.

There will soon be a new group of Building Trades partners forming. This is the MAC Council. It is comprised of 6 crafts; IBEW, UA, Ironworkers, Sheet metal Workers, Elevator Workers, and the Asbestos Workers. The MAC bylaws state that this organization shall utilize a Code of Excellence program. This is not a replacement for the Building Trades but an alliance of Mechanical Crafts that share the same philosophy and basic goals. We will market our talents as a collective group as opposed to doing it on our own.

The Repeated Discharge rule will address ways to correct chronic terminations. A neutral member of the Appeals Committee shall determine the continued eligibility for referral.

At the Trust Meeting We terminated the services of Marana Benefits. The new firm is Benesys and we will undergo a 90 day turnover of services. I am looking forward to the enhanced services that they offer such as monthly statements

A’S GAME
We had 75 tickets sold for the A's game august 5th against the Angels.  The BBQ before the game was a big hit.  Many thanks to Brandon & Brandy O'Neill for their help to make the A's game and BBQ possible.

We had, believe it or not, too much beer along with soda and water.  Lunch was served from 11:30 up until game time at 1:00 in the parking lot with tri-tip sandwiches smothered in BBQ sauce, hot chicken off the grill and hot dogs for the kids.  Brownies and cupcakes for dessert.  A great time was had by all.  We will try and make this an annual event to go along with the Giants bus trip.  Hope to see next year.
Thank you,  Dean Lloyd

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Welcome to the start of the 2007 local election campaign.  By the time you receive this newsletter it will be 60 days or so to election day.  Various agents in the office have been involved in the process since March 2007.

The IBEW is one of the top groups involved in local, state and national politics.  We donate a lot of money and send out information to the membership on candidates, and even issues, that affect workers and their families.

The next 60 days are where the rubber meets the road and we need to have members stepping up to help.  As President, I want to break the lack of support and engagement by the membership.

The various Unions of Napa & Solano Counties that represent about 47,000 Union Members jointly united to endorsed the candidates you see listed above.  This is huge and a first.

Please, do not wait to be asked to help or asked twice.  We need help for each one of these candidates.  Mike Smith is the point of contact—call or email mikes@ibewlu180.org
.

Respectfully,

Stan Nelson

Napa-Solano Central Labor Council

Amidst record-setting attendance by members of the Napa-Solano Central Labor Council, official Delegates of the Council voted on August 16th to establish an entirely new Executive Board.  Newly elected board members consist of the following: President – Jon Riley (Firefighters, Local 1186), Secretary/Treasurer – Roy Chaffee (SEIU, United Healthcare Workers West), 1st Vice President – Pete Derenale (United Food and Commercial Workers, Local 5), 2nd Vice President – Dave Harrison (Operating Engineers, Local 3), 3rd Vice President – Emilio Rivera (Iron Workers Union, Local 378), 4th Vice President – Mike Smith (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 180), 5th Vice President – Tamekia Robinson (SEIU, Local 1000), 6th Vice President – Mark Hollibush (International Association of Machinists, Local 1173).

In addition, Council Delegates elected three new Trustees: Cindy Bannister (SEIU, Local 1021), Rod Cameron (United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters, Local 343), and Lou Franchimon (Napa-Solano Counties Building and Construction Trades Council). The Napa-Solano Central Labor Council, working in partnership with both the Building and Construction Trades Council and the United Workers for Local Government, also gave serious consideration to a host of candidates running for local office this November.  Endorsements shall be made public later this month.   “Our mission with respect to these three groups,” said President Jon Riley, “is to establish a united voice for labor concerning issues that will affect not only our membership of over 47,000 local workers, but all working families in our area.”

UNION BUILT MEANS BETTER BUILT
You want a “ no-worry” electrical system installed in your home safe, reliable and guaranteed.  Then you need an electrical system installed by a union electrical contractor.  That’s right– UNION!  A competent union electrical contractor who employs qualified IBEW union electricians.

Each IBEW journeyman learns the trade through a 3 to 5 year Apprenticeship program.  This extensive training combines on–the-job practical experience with classroom theory and testing.  And the training doesn’t stop there.  Continuing education constantly up-dates the union electrician’s skills through programs sponsored by the IBEW and NECA.
