Business Manager's Report

Extension to the Collective Bargaining Agreement;

At the Special Called Meeting held on Wednesday, August 2, 2006, the membership voted on the agreement that had been negotiated with NECA.  Our negotiations committee had met with Management several times and came up with what we felt was an agreement that benefited both Labor and Management, but most of all our industry.  The following is an outline of the changes;
1.   A 4 year contract with a $2.00 per year increase (i.e. 2008-2012)
2.   Automatic insertion of any new Category 1 language into the contract, as soon as it is published.
3.   Add wire strippers to the tool list.
4.   Add new drug program language negotiated with Labor and Management. We would use the IBEW/NECA minimum standards, except suspicion testing, as our basis and use what was learned in Stockton, Orange County and San Diego. Use the LMCC for start up funding and then run the program through the H & W.
5.   Add the pattern Safety Committee language to the contract (see artlicle15, sec 15 of constitution) Add to dispatch the ability to call for an OSHA (10 or 30) trained electrician as a special skill. (Will not be implemented until training has been offered.)
6.   Add 12 cents (or equivalent %) to the CAF. (Employer Money)
The vote of the membership was 70% in favor of the extension.  The logic for this long-term agreement is multi-faceted.  The industry sorely needs a sense of stability.  This will accomplish that.  Virtually every General Contractor, Developer, Customer, or Public Agency who we have approached for long term commitments to use Local Union 180 for their electrical work has asked the same question.  “What are my costs going to be in a year, two years, or longer if we agree to this?”  That question is now off the table.   The relationship with NECA is now as good as it has ever been and this allows us to concentrate on working together to increase our Market Share in this jurisdiction.  It improves our ability to organize electricians as well as new Signatory Contractor.  This local is on the cutting edge of where the IBEW needs to be, and this agreement will get us there.

Wireless Internet

Local 180 now has a “hotspot”, a place with a high-speed wireless internet connectivity provided by an active wireless access point. If you are in our lobby and your lap top computer has a compatible wireless G adapter, then you can access the wireless network and access the internet.
Travelers are welcome to use this to “keep in touch”.

We now have a computer with high-speed internet access to view the IBEW’s new “Hour Power” web site in the lobby.  This computer also has many of the IBEW videos and power points installed - ready to view.  Past power points from Union meetings are also available for viewing.

International President Edwin D. Hill: The State Of Our Union 2005

“State of Our Union” is the video message from International President Ed Hill that has generated attention throughout the construction industry. President Hill speaks directly to rank and file IBEW members in the construction industry, with plain talk and common sense about our goals, our future and our commitment to excellence – and the obstacles, including self-imposed problems -- that prevent us from succeeding. Released in the summer of 2005, this message has won praise from IBEW members, other trades, contractors, those who use the services of the unionized electrical construction industry.
Watch the video at the Union Hall and also visit the IBEW HOUR POWER web site.

LOANS & EMPLOYMENT
The office receives many calls from lenders to verify employment.  IBEW L.U. 180 is not your employer - we refer you to employment.  We cannot give out your information, we can only confirm you are a member and the wage rate (public records for prevailing wage).  Some lenders understand the nature of construction work and will accept your listing of IBEW L.U. 180 - however, many other will not.
Please save your self time and missed opportunity for your loan by providing your employment information to the lender.  What we can provide you is a report of every job this Local has referred you to.  The report will list dates of employment, wages and the employer’s address.  We cannot report on referrals outside of this Local.

NEW MEMBERS OF YOUR FAMILY

Be it a marriage, birth, adoptions or some other method of adding to your family, you need to add them to your medical coverage.  The proof is a certification of the event (marriage, birth, adoption).  It is also important to remember the beneficiary role this/these new family member(s) play in your estate/insurances.

Please keep in mind departing member(s) affect the above and you must remove they from coverage/beneficiary - unless you are obligated to retain them.
Please call us if you need more information on the above or other matters relating to your “benefits of being an IBEW” member.

Exam Board Report
In an attempt to assist our brothers and sisters, the Exam Board will be providing a Pending Exam Class at the Hall, the second Tuesday of every month from 5:00 to 9:00 pm.  [The first class will be May 9th.]  This class is offered to those electricians who have not yet passed the Local’s Journeyman Inside Wireman Test.  The class is free to all participants and does NOT require registration.  Simply show up the night of the class (no later than 6:00 pm) and the Exam Board members will assist you in those areas where your skills could be strengthened.  You may attend these classes as many times as you wish.  This is NOT a class to prepare you for the State Certification Test.

Retiree's Corner
The meeting for the Retirees’ Club is held on the first Wednesday of the month.  They are held at the Training Center at 12:30 P.M.  All retirees and spouses are welcome. Widows of retired members are encouraged to get involved.

From the President:

SAFETY; one of the most important aspects of our daily jobs. It is often taken for granted and complacency sets in. It takes a serious accident to snap us back to reality. One of our members was injured, electrocuted, and brought back from the dead. Luckily, fast reaction on the part of crewmembers and the Vallejo Paramedics, and the fact that the devil wouldn’t have him, Ron (Tron) Thompson is alive and recovering. We all wish him a speedy recovery. Please, assume nothing. Test conductors and equipment if there is any way possible for it to be energized. Protect yourself.
Dean Lloyd is heading up the Jobsite Delegate program. You may be receiving a call to update your voter registration information. Please do so and vote for a Labor friendly candidate. Interviews will be held for the upcoming elections on August 29th, and 30th. A list of endorsed candidates will be mailed prior to the election.
The Napa-Solano Central Labor Council will have a picnic on September 4, 2006 from 11 am to 4 pm at the Pena Adobe Park. The cost is $10 for adults, $8 for retirees, and kids under 12 are free. There will be beer, sodas, tri-tip, hamburgers, and hotdogs. The water slides are going to be available. For tickets, contact the Labor Council at 707-428-1055.

From the Organizers:

As summer moves along, we continue to meet with new prospective contractors and possible new members and apprentices. On almost a daily basis, we have non-union electricians come to our window looking to join our ranks. The reasons are always the same. Better benefits, a pension and a decent wage. Most of these non-represented workers have grown tired of receiving little or no health care or medical benefits. The ones that do, almost never receive any type of pension or if they do it’s some stripped form of a 401K plan.
The theme is constant. As we approach Labor Day, it’s a good time to reflect on organized labor and the good things it has provided for American workers. Living wages, health benefits, pension. These are all the result of the bar being set high enough by organized labor. Without our efforts, this country might have remained a place for sweat shop workers with no rights or future. We have raised the level of wages and benefits for even the non-bargained workers by forcing their employers to pay at a better level just to hold onto the workers they have. The merit shops will always fall behind as they don’t understand the most basic philosophies of organized labor and the contractors that employ them. Better trained, better educated, better paid, better benefits equal a more productive worker that can consistently produce a higher quality product in less time and a worker that can truly take pride in the work he or she does while providing a good life for them and their families.
Enjoy the Labor Day holiday; you earned it for you, your family and even the non-union worker that has benefited from your efforts.

DON’T DRAG-UP, YOUR NEXT JOB COULD BE HARDER...

The small business incubator works in mysterious ways.  Some people come in and chat and we never see them move forward.  Others go on to contracting and we provide additional support.  Skip providing the business “back office” type support and I provide training in project management, estimating and bidding.  Still some just chat a few times and boom they are out doing it to it.

Our latest member to go into business is Mark Schadwald, who has background in residential and commercial.  Mark came in for a short conversation about the assistance the incubator could offer.  Some time goes by and Mark drops back in to let us know he got his C-10 and was going to give it a go.  A little more time goes by and he comes in asking what he needs to do to start hiring because he is too busy!

Mark followed the basic steps.  He found a niche, residential service work in Vallejo.  By providing his customer great service: showing up when scheduled and doing the job for the price quoted he gained repeat business.  Then the customer started referring others to Mark’s Electric.  The right plan in the right area at the right time with the service to back it up.

Now do not drag-up and run out to get your license!  Many talk with us and a few follow through.  Not all that follow through make it big, some do, but not all.  Many follow down Mark’s path working harder for themselves then the company they just dragged from.  When he is not physically performing electrical work, he is out soliciting for work, estimating or doing the billing and other paperwork afterwards.  Good thing he only has 24 hours in a day!

mark all smiles
p.s. Mark’s always got a big smile going on — all is good!

UNION BUILT MEANS BETTER BUILT
You want a “ no-worry” electrical system installed in your home Safe, reliable and guaranteed.  Then you need an electrical system installed by a union electrical contractor.  That’s right– UNION!  A competent union electrical contractor who employs qualified IBEW union electricians.

Each IBEW journeyman learns the trade through a 3 to 5 year Apprenticeship program.  This extensive training combines on–the-job practical experience with classroom theory and testing.  And the training doesn’t stop there.  Continuing education constantly up-dates the union electrician’s skills through programs sponsored by the IBEW and NECA the IBEW & NECA were instrument in establishing mandatory state Licensing in California.  Why? Because we believe that our work is superior & we stand behind it! PROTECT YOURSELVES
