SERVING NAPA AND SOLANO COUNTIES SINCE 1901

Business Managers Report

Electrical Certification:

After seven years of legislative process the state will begin registering electricians in October of 2002. It is imperative that we as Union Electricians be the first to apply for and pass the test for Certification. This will once again show our superior training and that our members are the best. As soon as the applications are available we will notify our members. I hope to be able to obtain an application from every member and present them to the Department of Apprenticeship Standards as a block. This will indicate our readiness to test and become certified. Full certification is currently scheduled for January of 2005. (not that far away) Applications will cost $75.00, testing will cost $100.00, and renewal (every three years) will be
$100.00. If you fail the test, you may retest within 60 days. Test location will be throughout the state. Locations will be announced as we receive them. There will be many more questions and as soon as answers are available they will be published. A web-site is also being established as a joint effort of IBEW/NECA.

To apprentice Randy Shahan on his marriage to Stacey on May 18, 2002.
To Michael & Rochelle Samansky on the birth of their son "Collin" born July 8, 2002.

Recovering
From Webster's;

"an undesirable or unfortunate happening that occurs unintentionally and usually results in injury, damage, or loss."
In the type of work we do and the conditions that we work under, it is inevitable that accidents will occur. We must be aware at all times that injury, damage, and loss can be a result of these accidents.

We recently had a work related accident that occurred at the Valero Refinery. It resulted in serious injury to one of our members. Brother Rob Arnold was severely injured and is recovering from surgery. He received a flash burn with most of the damage to his hands. He is undergoing therapy and hopes to be home by the weekend. We wish him a speedy and full recovery.

Please fill out the form following the President's Report so that the proper people can be notified in case of an emergency.

Condolences
It is with great sadness that we extend our sympathies to the family of Lucy Pinckard. Lucy passed away suddenly and unexpectantly on July 5, 2002. She leaves a grieving family and host of friends. Our prayers and wishes go out to her son John, and husband Dan. Brother John Pinckard is a member as is his father, our Past President, Dan Pinckard. Again or deepest sympathies to the family.

It is with deep sorrow that we report on the death of one of our own. Brother Donald Lee Rice passed away on July 16, 2002. Don served the Brotherhood from 1946 until his retirement in 1936, with an interruption by military service in the Army from 1950 to 1952. After retiring he was extremely helpful by sup-plying computer support to the Local for many years. He was instrumental in helping us set up and maintain our hardware and software. He is and will be missed.

Retiree's Corner
The monthly meetings for the Retirees Club are held the first Wednesday of each month. They are held at the Training Center. All retirees and spouses are welcome. Widows of retired members are encouraged to get involved.

For additional information;
Ken can be reached at (707) 643-4139.

From the Retiree's at their 4th of July picnic meeting;

"To all the persons that operated the IBEW Local #180 Federal Credit Union and took care of our financial needs. A great big Thank You for your labor that went beyond the normal call of duty. You were always there when we needed you. Many Thanks from the Local 180 Retirees."
From the President
The work picture is improving for the members working out of Local 180. The books are clearing out slowly but surely.
The Lambie Road Peaker Project has had the completion date pushed up to the 1st of December Along with the three under way, Cal Pine has the go ahead on the Wolfskill Power Plant. It is to be bid soon and the completion date on it is the same as the others, December 1st at
We still have a lot of hands at Valero Refinery, with more work being delegated to Fischbach-Moore.
We have finally dispatched apprentices to the point that our list has been exhausted. We have sent out 5 new men off of the availability list.
There has been interest in helping out with the Political Activities in our jurisdiction. If you would like to be involved and help with this very important cause, please call the Hall and leave a message. Each of the Executive Board Members has been asked to represent the geographical area in which they reside. They can use all the help that you are willing to give. There are many municipalities and districts that have bond measures either approved or in the works. We have a voice and it's time to start utilizing it!
August 8th will be our next regular meeting night. It is also the night the Blood Mobile will be here. We had 35 donors at the last blood drive. If you donate blood, we will sponsor your meal for the pre-meeting BBQ. This is a very worthwhile cause, and it is our way to give back to the community.
I would once again like to thank the members that have manned the work at the Valero Refinery. Your workmanship has not gone unnoticed. It makes me proud of the Brotherhood when I receive a call from a client thanking me for the talent that the men bring to the jobsite.
Unfortunately, accidents can be a hell of a wake up call. Please, for the sake of your family and loved ones, use all protective devices that &e made available to you. We are in one of the most dangerous occupations, and most of our contractors do a fair job of providing safety equipment. If you feel there is something that could help prevent an accident, don't hesitate to bring it up to your foreman or journeyman.

Dan Broadwater
President Local 180

From the Organizer:
The work situation is finally improving. The books are clearing fast. There is a tremendous amount of work slated to start in Napa and Solano county which should keep us all busy for the next three years. With all this good fortune, Organizing un-represented electricians and contractors will be my primary focus. We must take an aggressive approach when these opportunities present themselves.

The Residential unit continues to boom. Our signatory contractors continue to secure more work. We have nearly exhausted the new apprentice list. Several local non-signatory contractors have lost some great Wireman lately. Their loss is our gain.

We still have a growing need for qualified residential wiremen. Please contact Dan or myself.

Sound and Communications is still sluggish with very few calls coming in. The books are nearly clear and the lay offs have seemed to have subsided.

Hope to see you all at the picnic.

Rich Mattson, Organizer
