Business Manager's Report

Dear Brothers and Sisters, I cannot think of the words to better express the attack the ABC has placed on your right to be union than to copy below the bulletin from the State Building Trades concerning an ABC message to their members:

To: ABC Members
By Pete Dickson, President
There has never been a time in our industry when the slogan, "Get into Politics or Get Out of Business", applied more.  During our visit with members of the TN Congressional delegation, it became very clear that the Democrats are increasing their efforts to oppose most every bill that would benefit or protect our industry and seek passage of legislation which would harm our industry.  The greatest example is organized labor, with the help of the Democrats, is attaching amendments to most any bill to expand the use of Davis-Bacon wages.
You also must talk to your employees about the Presidential election.  You are not allowed to tell your employees who to vote for but you can express your thoughts on the best candidate for our industry and the protection of their jobs.  ABC has resources to assist you in communicating with your employees regarding politics.
The Democratic candidate has indicated he will work closely with organized labor if elected.  There is "A Clear Choice" for our industry in regard to the Presidential election.
We must elect John McCain! Get involved! Don't wait! "GET INTO POLITICS OR GET OUT OF BUSINESS!"
Then we have news from Southern California:
Today the San Diego Superior Court ruled in favor of the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California (SBCTC) and rejected an attempt to place an anti-PLA initiative on the November ballot in Chula Vista.  The initiative, backed by the San Diego Chapter of ABC, would have banned PLAs on all city and city-funded projects in Chula Vista.

This is not about which political party a person belongs to, it is the attack on organized labor and YOUR right to work under a collective bargained agreement.  In our own back yard, we have so called “union friendly” supporters running for and holding office.  However, these folks do not want to build even the smallest shack – but if they have to, it would be union…  Holding office is performing the greatest good for the greatest number while protecting the minority.  Not an easy task.

Therefore, when we ask for you help/support in political action; it is for all of our benefit.  To borrow the line from the ABC, "GET INTO POLITICS OR GIVE UP YOUR RIGHT TO BE UNION!"

Picnic

The Local Union 180 Picnic has been scheduled for Sept 20th at Lake Solano Park.  Last year, with nearly 250 people in attendance, the picnic got so large that we needed help.  We are asking for volunteers to help form a picnic committee to develop and oversee this year’s picnic. It is just too big for one or two people to manage.  The help can range from just making suggestions to hands-on involvement.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. And It could mean the difference between a huge success and a disaster!  If you are interested, call Dean Lloyd at 707-337-0347.

SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST:

A robust middle class.  Economic growth and shared prosperity.  The American Dream.  None are possible unless workers have the free choice to bargain for a better life—in their workplaces and in our nation.

That’s why IBEW members need the Employee Free Choice Act—critical legislation that would restore workers' freedom to form unions and bargain for better wages, health care, and working conditions—and have a voice in our economy.

We’re teaming up with hundreds of organizations and unions to launch a massive campaign—the Million Member Mobilization.  Please visit http://www.freechoiceact.org/page/s/ibew

OAKLAND A's GAME

Sunday, July 13th against the Angels.  The Union Hall has purchased a block of 50 tickets for the game and they are on sale at the office window for $15.00 each; they are regularly priced at $35.00.

We are sitting in the “all you can eat” section.  It is on the third deck behind home plate.  They are offering hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, peanuts, ice cream, soda, and water. They will only give you three items at a time but you can get into line as many times as you want.  The food and drinks are offered through the 7th inning.
Sorry, no beer, you have to purchase that separately.

Pick up your tickets ASAP.  When they are gone; they are gone.  If you have any questions about the game you can call me at 707-337-0347 Dean Lloyd.

THE 4TH ANNUAL GIANTS GAME BUS TRIPHAPPEN SUNDAY AUGUST 10TH.

The Apprentice Monthly

On Friday, June 20th, I attended the graduation of the Napa - Solano JATC class of 2008.  I was honored to be a guest as I am still only a third-year Apprentice.  It is awesome to see these guys go from being Apprentices one day to achieving the status of Journeyman Wiremen.  This is something that we all look forward to as we struggle through every year of in-depth curricula, while, at the same time, striving to soak up all the knowledge we can out in the field.  It is definitely a big sacrifice we all make giving three to five years of our lives to go through the program, but the benefits are outstanding.  It really helps all of us still in the program to know that someday soon, we will reap the rewards of all of our hard labor.  Having worked with some of the graduating class, I know that this is a great group of guys that are going to make valuable contributions to both the IBEW and NECA.  Every year, we  turn out elite craftsmen,  which  ensures that we shall remain the standard by which all other electricians are measured.  We have a program that not only elevates people to this level of education and trade skill, but also gives working class people the chance to make a good living  - one that is comparable with living standards achieved by others who choose the college route.  Congratulations to all of you guys who are moving on to the next phase in your careers.  I hope the best for all of you, and I cannot wait to get there myself.  Any questions or comments are always welcome via email at davidiloff@comcast.net..

From the President

I wish to thank everyone for the vote of confidence in me as your President.  I look forward to pursuing the challenges, and taking advantage of the opportunities, that lie ahead of us during my next three years in office.  When I say “us”, I really mean “us”!!!  Increasing the strength of Local 180, and expanding our work opportunities, requires the diligence and integrity of each and every one of us – whether it’s putting in a solid 8-for-8, staying on the cutting edge of our industry’s technological advancements, ensuring that our contractors and their customers are convinced that they’ve received value that none other than the IBEW can provide, or getting involved politically.  The General Election (November 4, 2008) will be critical to the future of working men and women, both locally and nationally.  PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD WHO WILL BE AT LEAST 18 YEARS OF AGE BY ELECTION DAY IS REGISTERED TO VOTE!  Remember, anyone who has moved, or changed his or her name, must re-register to vote.  Also, we will need a group of people from each city within our local jurisdiction to step up and start attending city council meetings.  It is only going to take a few hours one night a month, and that doesn’t seem to be too much to ask from our membership.  If you would like help out in this way, please email me at stann@ibewlu180.org and let me know the city in which you live.  I’ll keep you informed of the city council meetings schedule.  Again, thank you for your support.

Stan Nelson

PV Update

IBEW LOCAL UNION 180’S “GIVE-A-WATT” UPDATE
As stated in our last newsletter, and at the Union Meeting, the “Give-A-Watt” program is truly a noble and practical investment in our future.  We strive to take on these endeavors in furtherance of the objects of our IBEW Constitution—we are to assist each other in sickness or distress and elevate the moral and social conditions of our members, their families and dependents.  Conceivably, any of our families or our dependents might need the services of a non-profit service agency some day.

Therefore, it is heartwarming that many of you called with an interest in assisting and learning via hands-on installation at Heather House and Dixon Family Services.  At this time, we are working on the funding of the panels and inverters, which  shall be provided at cost.  All other materials and your labor shall be donated.

Timing is subject to the fundraising and permitting processes.  Both agencies  operate within  buildings owned by their respective cities, and require  typical Landlord - Tenant approval.  Installation for the Heather House is estimated towards the end of August, and Dixon Family Services is towards the end of October.  Please call or email to sign up to help.

Aguon; Pitchers – Stan Nelson and Joe Molina; Infielders – Sergio Pena, Mike Hoopes, Mike Coral, Matt Lopez, Brandon O’Neil; Outfielders – Brooks (Bo) Wristen, Mike Borleck, Matt Mcrena, T.J. the team

The brutal winds in Suisun were no match for us, as we dominated the spring season with a 9-1 record in Division 2.  We entered the one-game elimination playoff in 1st place on Friday the 13th.  It just so  happened that Joe Molina, who was pulling double-shifts that day,  still got out of bed to come represent our local.  Joe Molina was on fire that night and won the MVP award. Thanks for being a team player!

Every brother played his part in this season.  All payers showed great effort and sportsmanship.  To anyone  we missed that helped the team out, the team thanks you.
To our union “IBEW LOCAL 180”, we thank you for supporting us and believing in us.  Next time you’re in the Union Hall, take a peek at our 2008 Spring Season Championship Trophy.

The Summer Season starts on Friday the 27th @ 9:00 p.m., at Lambrecht Park in Suisun.  Keep in mind that the Local 180 team has been placed into Division 1, which means we will be competing against the best.  Please come and support us.

Thanks again.

UNION BUILT MEANS BETTER BUILT
You want a “ no-worry” electrical system installed in your home safe, reliable and guaranteed.  Then you need an electrical system installed by a union electrical contractor.  That’s right– UNION!  A competent union electrical contractor who employs qualified IBEW union electricians.

Each IBEW journeyman learns the trade through a 3 to 5 year Apprenticeship program.  This extensive training combines on–the-job practical experience with classroom theory and testing.  And the training doesn’t stop there.  Continuing education constantly up-dates the union electrician’s skills through programs sponsored by the IBEW and NECA.
