From the President
The work picture has picked up since the last Newsletter. Book 1 is at 48 - Journeymen Book 2 has 103 - Journeymen, and Book 3 is at 12-Journeymen. There are 3 apprentices on the available for work.

Fischbach & Moore has picked up the completion of the Co-Gen along with maintenance and fire work. In the last three weeks we have dispatched over 50 hands to the Valero Refinery. A BATT Certification is required to work at Valero and the refineries in the nine Bay Area Counties. The phone number for BATT Training is 925-313-0500. There are several large projects scheduled for construction at the refinery if they can get through the government agencies and environmentalists.

Ground has finally broken on the three Peaker Plants in the Lambie Industrial Park. Two of them will start the end of June and the third will be in July. A fourth made it through the planning department but will have to go to the Fairfield City Council for approval.

The schools are beginning to hire a few hands. Pre-qualification and Project Labor Agreements have assisted us in getting Union Contractors on the Vallejo and Fairfield School District Projects.

November will be a very important election for Organized Labor. At stake is the office of Governor. We need to make sure that Gray Davis gets re-elected or we will see everything that we have fought for in the last four years go down the toilet. Bill Simon doesn't give a damn about working men and women. Please get registered and vote!

There will be a Blood Drive on August 8, prior to the Union Meeting. It will start at 4:00 pm and continue until the meeting starts. If you donate blood, your pre-meeting BBQ meal will be paid for. The BBQ's will start at 4:30 from now on.

In closing, I would like to thank the traveling Brothers and Sisters that have helped us man our refinery work.

Dan Broadwater
President Local 180

From the Organizer:
I would like to begin my monthly report by expressing my gratitude to the Executive Board Officers for their service to the Local Union during the last three years. The E-Board helped the Local achieve goals that were second to none in the Ninth District of the IBEW. The results of these efforts were recognized when Local 180 had the largest membership increase in the entire Ninth District in 2001, with a 18.9 % increase. None of this could have happened without the cooperation of the Membership, our Contractors and the Officers you elected. I feel confident that the next Executive Board will also accept the challenge and many great things will happen in the next three years. I'm looking forward to working with the new Officers and hope that all our Brothers and Sisters will rise to the occasion and support the Local Union in its mission to dominate the electrical construction industry in Napa and Solano counties.

Rich Mattson, Organizer

UNION BUILT MEANS BETTER BUILT
You want a “ no-worry” electrical system installed in your home Safe, reliable and guaranteed.  Then you need an electrical system installed by a union electrical contractor.  That’s right– UNION!  A competent union electrical contractor who employs qualified IBEW union electricians.

Each IBEW journeyman learns the trade through a 3 to 5 year Apprenticeship program.  This extensive training combines on–the-job practical experience with classroom theory and testing.  And the training doesn’t stop there.  Continuing education constantly up-dates the union electrician’s skills through programs sponsored by the IBEW and NECA the IBEW & NECA were instrument in establishing mandatory state Licensing in California.  Why? Because we believe that our work is superior & we stand behind it!
