New classes to be offered by JATC
BATT Class Scheduled:
As you know the Bay Area refineries require a certificate of completion
of a safety class as a condition of employment. Also, this certificate
must be up-dated every two years. Mike Jones has announced that a "BATT"
class has been scheduled for Saturday, February 12. Remember that this
is a eight (8) hour class and a small fee will be charged. Call Mike at
the JATC Office to register for the class at 707 251-0315.
Journeyman Classes at the new Training Facility have been scheduled to begin on March 7, 2000, at 6:00 p.m. The first session will be Codeology. Call the JATC Office to register.
CONGRATULATIONS to Deane Rader
CONGRATULATIONS to Deane on being selected as an Apprentice Consultant with the State of California, Department of Industrial Relations, Apprenticeship Standards. Deane is one of only seven consultants in Northern California. Currently he is assigned to do field work representing apprentices during hearings. We know he will do an excellent job in any capacity he chooses. We wish him the very best..
THANK YOU DAN PINCKARD!
Dan has earned a big thank you from the Local as well as the Apprenticeship Committee for serving as Interim Training Director for these last few months. His service to the JATC was commendable.
LOCAL 180'S CHARTER
Did you know that our Charter was issued to Local #180 by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in May, 1901?
It has been displayed in our Union Office, and at the Regular General Union Meetings for almost 99 years now, and understandably had some deterioration in both the frame and the Charter. Since the quality of the print is fading out, and Scotch tape only lasts so long, and since we are nearing the 100th Birthday of Local #180,
A decision was made to have the original restored. It has been taken to a company in the East Bay that specializes in restoration of documents, and should take a few weeks to be completed.
SO just in case, before the original was taken we had Mark Bowder of Sonoma Printers make a full copy, and then we had the copy framed. So until we get the original back, we will be using the duplicate.
Pension Improvements
Pension Meeting On Saturday, January 22, Steve DeLapp, representing
Segal Company of San Francisco, gave an informational presentation to those
members attending the meeting. The topic was Retirement Options, specifically
Defined Benefit Plans vs. Defined Contribution Plans, 401-K,
Money Purchase Plans, Profit Sharing Plans, and other related subjects.
The questions from the attending members were excellent and everyone
left with a much better understanding of what options are available. The
Trustees appreciate the interest and input from the plan participants.
With the information gathered at the meeting and in-put from our members,
the Pension Trust can better realize the goal of making improvements to
the Retirement Plan.
Inside Construction Agreement
The Inside Construction Agreement with the extension has finally
been sent to the printers. Once they are completed, we will send a new
copy to all those working under that Agreement.

We have had a good response on volunteers for committees. We can still use more involvement. If more members participate it increases each members "ownership" of their union. If you can help contact the Business Manager or the President. Thank you.

Welcome Mike Jones
Welcome to the new Training Director Mike Jones who has been hired as
Apprenticeship Coordinator by the Solano/Napa Counties
Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee.
Mike was born in Monroe, Louisiana, and graduated from the four year
inside wireman program at the Monroe J.A.T.C. Work was slow in the area,
so he began to travel around the country, from Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas,
Georgia, Los Angeles, Alaska. His connection with Local #180 began in 1983
while working in Fairbanks when he met our Local #180 Brothers Dan Christian
and Donovan Maher. Eventually he came to California, and went to work on
the David Grant Hospital at Travis. As time passed his friendships
increased and developed with Local #180 Brothers & Sisters, and he
decided to make #180 his home. He officially became a member of our Local
when his Travel Card was accepted in 1993. He received his California Teaching
Credential from Sacramento State College, and is a graduate of the four
year program at the National Joint Apprenticeship Training Institute. He
began teaching in our apprenticeship program in 1994. He and his wife,
Vicki, have two sons, and make their home in Suisun.
Mike has expressed his gratitude to all the Local #180 members who
went out of their way to make him and his family welcome. We are confident
that he is sure to be an asset to our training program.
